Fatal Fire Claims Life of 72-year-old Man
A fire in an Upper West Side apartment building on Oct. 12 injured several firefighters and killed a 72-year-old resident.

A fire broke out at 208 West 88th Street on Saturday, Oct. 12, claiming the life of a 72-year-old man and injuring several firefighters.
The 72-year-old man—whose identity is pending proper family notification, according to a policespokesperson — was found by firefighters “in the apartment, unconscious and unresponsive,” ABC7 reported. The man was critically injured, and was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital but died of his injuries soon after.
The FDNY said that they received a call at around 8:19 p.m.. reporting a smoke and fire in the building. Firefighters found the fire broke out on the 4th floor of the 5-story apartment building, which is located between Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway on W. 88th St. According to the FDNY, about 60 firefigthers and EMT personnel responded and the fire was under control almost an hour after they were notified.
In addition to claiming the life of the unidentified 72-year-old man, three three firefighters who suffered minor injuries were transported to St Luke’s Hospital. Two civilians also suffered minor injuries, the FDNY said, but they refused medical attention at the scene.
The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation, the FDNY said.
