To step into the reception area at the Hamilton Senior Center Annex at 111 West 71st Street for their recent October Art Exhibit, was to step into an art gallery, the space transformed with wall-to-wall paintings and drawings, festive blue and green balloons and matching green chairs spaced six feet apart.

Johnnie Abreu, Program Coordinator - Education and Recreation, greeted visitors and handed out flyers as both artists and guests streamed in to view the one-day afternoon exhibit by members of Project FIND’s senior community.

Project FIND provides support to low and moderate-income and homeless seniors, housing up to 600 residents and providing essential services to more than 3,000 members across four senior centers on Manhattan’s west side. The Hamilton Annex, a newly renovated extension of the nearby Hamilton Senior Center at 73rd Street, is a prime location for many of Project FIND’s health and art activities, including yoga, strength training, walking clubs, gardening, knitting and art classes that produced the impressive exhibit by both experienced and brand-new artists, many picking up a brush or pencil for the first time during the pandemic.

The Senior Assistant Director at the Center, Daniel Young, said the “wide variety of amazing styles” on display were the culmination of several art classes provided at the center including an abstract art class, watercolor and Chinese brush painting.

The services at the Hamilton Annex are available to seniors 60 years and older. The artworks are a reminder that “life goes on after you retire and [this was] a beautiful way to show it,” Young said.
