Ashford & Simpson’s Sugar Bar — 254 West 72nd StreetSugar Bar, opened in 1996, is best known for the music. “For musicians, this is the place to be. This is the scene,” said a server. The bar’s owners, husband and wife Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, aim to bring the culture and warmth of Africa to New York City in an “east meets west” fusion atmosphere. “This is not just a place for music,” said Leila, who works at the bar. “It is a place for culture. It transports you to a different time and place.”
