Police investigating as apparent suicide, hotel closing outdoor space of Bar 54
A man plunged to his death from Bar 54 atop the Hyatt Centric Hotel on West 45th St. on January 25th, in what is reportedly being treated as a suicide.
The victim has been identified as Dale L. Cheney, 46 of Old Stamford, Rd. in New Canaan, CT. “Preliminarily, the victim does not appear to be a victim of a crime,” according to an NYPD spokesman. He was pronounced dead at the scene near the corner of Sixth Ave and W. 45th Street.
The Post quoted Tom Blundell, the general manager of Hyatt Centric Times Square who said the hotel community was “’heartbroken.”
He said Bar 54 outdoor space will be kept locked at all times as a result of the tragic incident.
Cheney, who reportedly has three young children, had just filed for divorce from his wife Lauren Cheney, 44, the day before his death, according to the New York Post, which cited public records.
The Post also cited police sources that said the NYPD was summoned to the couples apartment several times in 2008 in domestic disputes.
Cheney was a Harvard Business School graduate who had founded T Street Capital in Darien, CT., in 2013 after previous stints at Citicorp Venture Capital and Goldman Sachs according to a Linked In profile that has been disabled.
His current address in New Canaan, CT is a 6 bedroom, 7 bath home that was purchased in 2016 for $1.6 million.
It is second death plunge from the top floor bar in the past four months. Elizabeth Gaglewski, an aspiring across from Queens also fell from Bar 54 and died when she hit a 27th floor balcony last October.
