Safe for the Taking

A commercial delivery driver had thousands of dollars stolen out of a safe kept in his truck Oct. 11. Police said the 22-year-old Queens man parked his truck on the southwest corner of Amsterdam Avenue and West 73rd Street at 8:20 p.m. He was making a delivery to a newsstand across the street. He told police he locked the safe inside the truck and closed the back door with a commercial lock. When he returned five minutes later, the lock was removed and the safe was open. The driver reported $9,714 missing.

Fashion Weak

A woman reported to police that her $2,400 leather jacket was stolen during a Fashion Week show Sept. 14. Police said the 36-year-old woman from Japan, who was staying on the Upper West Side, was watching a show at the plaza near Lincoln Center. She placed her jacket on the side of her chair. She turned to chat with someone seated next to her. When she looked down shortly after, she realized her jacket was missing.

Petty Theft

A burglar broke into Carlebach Shul Synagogue on 305 W. 79th St. and West End Avenue July 18. An employee told police that, while inside, the burglar busted open an interior door to the main area of the synagogue. The burglar stole a collection box with about $25 inside.

Photography-Loving Crook

A New Jersey man had expensive camera equipment stolen from his car parked in front of 172 W. 81st St. and Amsterdam Avenue July 11. The thief smashed the passenger side front window of his 2003 silver Mercedes Benz and went through the center console. Items behind the driver’s seat were stolen as well. The thief took his Canon photography equipment, including a $500 lens, $350 flash and $850 camera.

Apple, Fresh Off the Truck

Tech-hungry criminals got ahold of two boxes of Apple iPads, straight off the UPS trucks that were delivering the new devices, which start at $499.
According to police, a UPS deliveryman was stacking boxes of iPads outside of his truck June 15 at 9:55 a.m. The truck was parked on West 67th Street, around the corner from the Apple Store at 1981 Broadway. A witness told police that a man walked up and snatched a box of iPads and ran west on West 67th Street, then south on Amsterdam Avenue. The box contained five iPads. Read more

Robbing for the Summer

Someone was able to swipe $1,962 worth of women’s clothing from Olive and Bette’s, at 252 Columbus Ave. and West 72nd Street. An employee told police that June 13 around 4 p.m., someone walked out with 11 pairs of shorts at $72 each and 13 linen scarves at $90 each.

Apartment Jewelry Heist

A man had thousands of dollars worth of jewelry stolen from his West 67th Street and Columbus Avenue apartment. Police said he was at home with an acquaintance June 11 around 7:30 p.m. When the friend left, the 41-year-old man realized that eight
pieces of jewelry worth $150,000 were missing. The missing jewelry included a $100,000 1920s ladies band with 33 diamonds and a $20,000 man’s diamond ring.

Boston Man’s Car Stolen

A 26-year-old Boston man realized that his car was stolen June 14. He told police that he had parked his black 2000 Mercury Cougar in front of 44 W. 77th St. and Columbus Avenue June 10. When he returned to his parking spot days later, the car was missing and had not been towed. The vehicle contained a $500 set of golf clubs, police said.

On the Wire

Thousands of dollars worth of wire were stolen June 2 from a building at 90 Amsterdam Ave., near West 64th Street. An employee for T-Mobile told police that cable wires owned by the cell carrier were removed from the building’s roof, which connects to the basement. An electrician sent to investigate on behalf of the company found that the wire was cut and the door to T-Mobile’s roof shelter was damaged, possibly using a crowbar. The three, 400-foot pieces of wire were valued at $10,000. It is unclear what purpose the wires served.

Tourist Theft Victim

A French woman staying on the Upper West Side reported that her room was burglarized Nov. 25. Cops said that at 7 p.m. that day, the 24-year-old awoke in her hostel, on West 83rd Street and Columbus Avenue, to find that her digital camera, computer and $300 in cash were missing. Her roommate was taking a shower and had left the door unlocked, according to police.
