Purse Snatching on Wheels
A woman was targeted by a purse-snatcher on two wheels. April 21 at 2:30 p.m., the 24-year-old Queens woman was on the northeast corner of West End Avenue and West 72nd Street when a man on a green bicycle approached her from behind. Cops said he swiped the bag she was holding in her hand and peddled off. The purse contained a BlackBerry cell phone and $100 cash.
Jewelry Stolen in Burglary
A burglar swiped $4,250 worth of jewelry from the apartment of a 77-year-old woman April 14. Police said the woman left her apartment, on West 79th Street between Riverside Drive and West End Avenue, at 12:30 p.m. to run errands. When she returned, the door was ajar and her jewelry was missing. Cops said the burglar stole a $450 pair of earrings, a $900 bracelet, a $1,700 pearl necklace and two bracelets worth $1,200.
Financial Folly
Police said that a student organization at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center Campus, the Fordham Follies, was robbed March 29. A member of the performance group told police that $2,400 that the group had collected was stolen from an office at the Fordham University School of Law, 140 W. 62nd St., between Columbus and Amsterdam avenues. The money was kept in an unlocked container in an unlocked desk drawer in a room that was accessible to others, police said.
Phone Snatching
A woman had the phone taken right out of her hand at 12:15 p.m., March 15. The 43-year-old Upper Manhattan woman told police that she was walking on West 86th Street between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West when a man approached her from behind and grabbed her $200 iPhone. She said the mugger ran west on West 86th Street with two other men. Isaias Cespedes, 18, was later arrested and charged with grand larceny.
Charge Card Stolen
A 35-year-old New Jersey woman had her debit card stolen from her purse at the American Laser Center, 154 W. 70th St. between Broadway and Columbus Avenue. She told police that March 20, she left the purse unattended in an office where she works. Later in the day, the purse was found open and the wallet was missing. The thief charged $840 to her debit card, police said.
Tavern on the Green Thief
A woman who bought thousands of dollars worth of memorabilia from Tavern on the Green and the Plaza Hotel reported that her merchandise was stolen March 13. Police said the woman, who owns a company based on West 72nd Street, was perusing eBay when she saw her Tavern on the Green items up for bidding. She discovered that the items were missing from her inventory. She says the only person with access to her inventory was a man she hired to help her move the Tavern on the Green items she recently purchased. The value of the items totaled $45,885.
Stolen Wheels
A car parked on the northeast corner of Riverside Drive and West 85th Street had its tires removed March 4 some time after 8 p.m. Police said that the following day, the car owner, a 50-year-old man, found his car jacked up with the two driver’s side tires removed. The puncture-resistant Michelin tires cost $800 each, according to cops.
Open Door Policy
Cash was stolen from Bourbon St., at 407 Amsterdam Ave. between West 79th and 80th streets, while the front door was left unlocked one morning. Cops said that Feb. 21 at 8:10 a.m., someone walked through the unsecured front door of the bar and into the office. That’s where the intruder found an envelope containing $4,500 in cash. The thief grabbed the money and walked out. The bar was closed for cleaning at the time of the burglary, according to police.
Home Burglarized
Two women sharing an apartment on West 73rd Street and West End Avenue reported a burglary to police Feb. 18. At 8:45 a.m. that morning, the burglar entered the front door, breaking the knob, cops said. An iPod and two Macbook laptops were reported stolen.
