What is Community Board 7?
Community Board 7 encompasses the area from West 59th to West 110th streets from the Hudson River to Central Park. Boards have 50 unpaid members who vote on issues in an advisory capacity. All members are appointed by the borough president to two-year terms, but half are recommended by the local city council members. On Board 7, City Council Members Gale Brewer, Melissa Mark-Viverito and Inez Dickens recommend, respectively, 17, 6 and 2 of the members.

Make Music New York Hits UWS
Get ready to feel the beat. Make Music New York, a citywide event, hits the streets this Tuesday, June 21, for an all-day festival of free concerts throughout the five boroughs. City Council Member Gale Brewer is sponsoring a 4-hour program at the Brandeis High School Campus Garden, at West 84th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. There will be free refreshments and a diverse lineup of musicians:
4 p.m. – Sarah Deleo, a young New York-based Jazz vocalist who conjures up images of Peggy Lee and the elegant supper club years of the 1950s and 1960s, singing classics of the American songbook. Read more
City Gives Out Free Bike Helmets
The DOT loves your skull! This Saturday, the Department of Transportation is giving away free bike helmets from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Columbus Avenue between West 87th and 88th Streets. While they last, the DOT will give out one helmet per person, for kids and adults. Each person must be fitted and sign a waiver (parents must be present to sign the waiver for kids under 18). The event is in partnership with Council Member Gale Brewer, the NYPD and Upper West Side Streets Renaissance. Check out nyc.gov/dot for more info.
FREE DENTISTRY FOR KIDS
City Council Member Gale Brewer sponsors Smiling Faces, Going Places, the NYU College of Dentistry Mobile Dental Care Van on the Upper West Side on Wednesday, May 25, 10 a.m.–8:30 p.m., outside P.S. 84, 32 W. 92nd St. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the van will see and treat P.S. 84 students, and from 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the van will see and treat all children, ages 6 months to 15 years. Dental treatment on the NYU Dental Van is provided by an experienced pediatric dentist and other NYU health care providers using state-of-the-art equipment. The dental services provided include: examinations and necessary X-rays, preventive services that include cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants and oral hygiene instructions, and fillings and simple tooth extractions. Recycling: Brewer supports recycling efforts at the local level, sponsoring community events where residents can recycle anything from batteries to bedsheets.
Green Food: In addition to being an ardent supporter of greenmarkets, Brewer has introduced legislation that would require city agencies to disclose where they source food from, in the hopes that it would encourage the city to buy locally. This would support local, small farming as well as reduce the greenhouse emissions that come with transporting food long distances.

Residents Resist Duane Reade Sign

A flashy electric billboard over the entrance to the new Duane Reade on W. 72nd St. has raised ire among local residents and elected officials. City Council Member Gale Brewer’s office has been receiving complaints about what one person living on the street called a “stoner raver light show” atmosphere that they claim the brightly lit sign has created on the residential street.

Riverside Center Gets Go-Ahead
After countless revisions and changes, the Riverside Center development unanimously passed the City Council Dec. 20, clearing the way for a project to be built on the last parcel of undeveloped land on the Upper West Side.
The final agreement on the massive project was hammered out after intense negotiations between Extell Development Corporation, Council Member Gale Brewer, members of Community Board 7 and the Speaker’s Staff. Read more

Messinger, West Side’s favorite daughter, isn’t slowing down

Ruth Messinger just turned 70, but it’s impossible to tell. The long-time activist, former politician and loyal West Sider continues to be as hard-working and ambitious as ever, and she made it clear that she has “no intention of going anywhere.”
“I have two children and eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren,” said Messinger, the president of the American Jewish World Service, “and I’m sorry that I’m not leaving them a world in better shape, but I am very proud of work I know they will keep doing to try to improve the world.” Read more
