For Roe v. Wade Supporters, Silence is No Longer a Choice
By Rep. Carolyn Maloney
Last Sunday, we marked the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that guarantees a woman’s right to choose. Reproductive freedom is at greater risk now than at any time since Roe was handed down in 1973, and family planning is under attack. Women can no longer afford to be silent. Read more
Nadler: Obama Didn’t Help Much on Zadroga
Long road to 9/11 Health Bill passage for local pols
By Josh Rogers
The drawn-out fight to pass the Zadroga 9/11 health bill was made even longer by the Obama administration’s indifference, but the legislation got crucial, unexpected G.O.P. help, Democratic Congressman Jerrold Nadler said Monday.
“We didn’t have the support of the administration,” Nadler said in a phone interview. “We never got it until it was late.” Read more
West Siders Go to the Polls
By Dan Rivoli
Most of the races West Siders will be voting for are foregone conclusions.

Powell Looks to Unseat Rangel
East Harlem Assembly Member Adam Clayton Powell IV, a scion to the Powell political family, announced his campaign against the Harlem lion Rep. Charles Rangel April 12.
Amid chants of “change is coming,” the five-term Assembly member kicked off his campaign on the neighborhood’s “lucky” corner: East 116th Street and Lexington Avenue, where he announced his first campaign for office in 1989. He unsuccessfully challenged then-Council Member Carolyn Maloney for her seat. Read more
Rep. Maloney: No Regrets
Near-blizzard conditions may have kept Rep. Carolyn Maloney from Washington, D.C., but the weather did not deter her from a morning interview on MSNBC, or a visit to Manhattan Media’s offices later that day. The eight-term Congresswoman stopped by to talk about her latest legislative accomplishments, primary elections and what she’s been reading. By the end of the interview, she’d been called back by the cable news network for an evening appearance. Read more
Top Stories of 2009
As 2009 draws to a close, we thought we’d paw through our archives to dig up some of the more interesting stories that we covered during the past 12 months. An East Side Adventurer
Not many people can say they’ve completed a marathon, let alone 20. And even fewer can say they’ve accomplished such a feat after the age of 50. But Clifton Maloney, husband of our local Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, wasn’t just anyone.
To the Maloney family, he was a beloved husband to Carolyn Jane Bosher Maloney and a father to Christina Paul Maloney and Virginia Marshall Maloney. He left behind a mother, Virginia Wells Maloney, and a sister, Virginia Maloney Lawrence, along with eight nieces and nephews. Read more
Feedback on ‘Run, Carolyn, Run’
To the Editor:
The State Legislature, under Sen. Charles Schumer’s Albany allies Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith, selected Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand to fill the seat of former Sen. Clinton.
Now we have Schumer lobbying the White House. This resulted in President Obama calling a potential 2010 Democratic Senate primary contestant, Long Island Rep. Steve Israel, and asking him to drop out even before he declared his candidacy! Quickly following, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer also gave up. Long Island Congress Member Carolyn McCarthy and Manhattan’s own Carolyn Maloney will soon receive phone calls from Read more
Run, Carolyn, Run
We wholeheartedly encourage East Side Rep. Carolyn Maloney to challenge Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in next year’s Democratic primary.
This is not a knock, necessarily, at Gillibrand’s qualifications, or at President Barack Obama and his Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s recent appeal for “party unity.”
It is an appeal to reaffirm the democratic process and the opportunity to have real voter choice in our leadership. Read more
CAROLINE: JUST LIKE US?
Carolyn. Caroline. Carolyn. Caroline.(I feel like David Letterman at the Oscars: Uma. Oprah. Uma. Oprah.)
Carolyn Maloney is just one of a slew of career politicians who are now up against Caroline Kennedy for Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat. And if I were Carolyn & Co., I would be so not happy.
