Duane Wants Early Board 7 Bike Lane Review

With many community leaders on board for the new protected bicycle lanes planned for Columbus and Amsterdam avenues, State Sen. Tom Duane wants the Department of Transportation to release the plan for full public review sooner than usual.

Duane sent a Feb. 9 letter to the department, signed by other West Side elected officials, asking for the plans to be sent to Community Board 7.

“The Department of Transportation’s outreach efforts and consultation has been excellent to date,” Duane said. “And there’s no reason to think releasing the proposal and subjecting it to final review would derail their proposal.” Read more

Thief Targets Businesses

Last week, cops recorded a string of burglaries targeting Upper West Side businesses. In each incident, the burglar tried to remove a door’s lock cylinder.

Laytner’s Linen & Home, at 2270 Broadway and West 82nd Street, was the target of an attempted burglary Nov. 26. The owner responded to a call from the alarm company. When he checked out the store, the cylinder of the emergency exit door was removed. The motion sensor inside the store never went off. No items were stolen.

City Brows, at 2265 Broadway and West 82nd Street, was burglarized Nov. 25. Cops said that when an employee opened the store for business, he noticed that a burglar had broken the cylinder lock on the front door. Two hundred dollars in cash was taken.

Discount Health and Beauty, at 140 W. 72nd St. between Columbus and Amsterdam avenues, was targeted Nov. 28. Police said that when an employee arrived to open the store, he noticed that the door’s cylinder lock was removed and that the door was open. An unknown amount of cigarettes and electric razors were taken.

Police also believe the thief is responsible for a burglary at Kidville Salon & Boutique and Capezio Boutique. The burglary at Dovetail restaurant, reported in the Dec. 3 West Side Spirit, is also believed to be committed by this suspect.
