“With a massive fare hike looming after the worst service cuts in a generation, public transit has never been a more important election year issue,” said Paul Steely White, executive director of Transportation Alternatives, a New York City group that advocates for bicycling, walking and public transit. PUTTING NAMES TO CORP. LANDLORDS

When the Department of Homeless Services wanted to open a shelter in a West 107th Street building last February, the city was unaware of the landlord’s identity. The building’s owner was G M Canmar Residence Corporation. But the West Side Spirit used Department of Finance records to identify the owner as Mark Hersh, a notorious landlord who intimidated his tenants into moving. Read more

SCHNEIDERMAN PICKS UP WS SUPPORT

Scott Stringer, Manhattan’s borough president and Upper West Sider, is backing his neighborhood’s favorite son for attorney general. Stringer endorsed Eric Schneiderman Aug. 26, citing his reform credentials and fighting corruption in the State Senate.

“If I only had one reason behind my decision, it is that there is no better candidate who will restore confidence in the government more effectively, more forcefully and with greater independence than Eric Schneiderman,” Stringer said in a statement. Read more

CO-OP STRIKES BACK AGAINST EMPIRE HOTEL

A panel of judges sided with residents of a co-op that say the Empire Hotel, a nightlife hotspot in the Upper West Side, is a noisy neighbor.

In a three-to-one decision, the co-op at 61 W. 62nd St. showed that the hotel’s rooftop bar caused “unreasonable” interference with the residents’ “right to use and enjoy their respective apartments,” according to an Aug. 24 ruling. Read more

Train Robbery

A Hell’s Kitchen man was robbed while riding the train home Aug. 18 at 1:51 a.m. Police said the 43-year-old man got on a southbound train on the 1/2/3 line at the West 79th Street and Broadway station. A man got on and grabbed the iPhone he was holding. The robber got off at the West 66th Street and Broadway stop.

Stick-Up At Park

Four young men were robbed at gunpoint while sitting on a bench in Riverside Park Aug. 18. The men, whose ages ranged between 18 and 20, were sitting near West 65th Street at 1 a.m., when a man and a woman approached. The man displayed a black semi-automatic handgun and told them to give up their possessions. The man and his accomplice fled south through Riverside Park. They made off with a $300 iPod, $70 cash and credit cards.

Smash and Grab

A Middletown, N.Y., woman had her car broken into and burglarized Aug. 21. The 26-year-old parked her car on West 78th Street between Riverside Drive and West End Avenue. When she returned, the passenger side rear window was broken. The $400 stereo was ripped out and a $500 GPS was taken. The woman’s $2,000 Dell laptop and $250 BlackBerry were taken from the trunk.

Jewelry Stolen

A woman reported to police Aug. 23 that thousands of dollars worth of jewelry was taken from her home on Broadway and West 77th Street. The jewelry stolen totaled $13,850 and included diamond necklaces, earrings, a pearl necklace and jade drop earrings. She told police the jewelry was taken while she was on vacation in July.
